In 1939 Mrs Vera Laughton Mathews became Director of WRNS and in 1941 founded the WRNS BT. The Trust was granted a Royal Charter in 1950. It is a registered charity (No.206529).

A member is anyone who served in the Women's Royal Naval Service and transferred to the Royal Navy before 1 November 1993, or anyone who has served in the WRNS since 3 September 1939, expect only those who have deserted from the Service (even if a pardon has been obtained).

The management of the Trust is vested in the Central Committee (Trustees) and comprises a mix of both retired and serving personnel. Trustees are nominated by ex-members of the Women's Royal Naval Service, and are elected annually at the Annual General Meeting of the Trust.

The Trustees agree the broad strategy and areas of activity for the Trust; they appoint both finance and grants committees.
